Soviet USB Drive Brings Tomorrow's Technology to the Present

Or vice versa

Because I have been writing about all sorts of gadgets lately and with this CeBIT happening all over the gadget sites, I haven't really had the time to occupy myself with my one and only passion, USB drives. I sometimes like to watch old soviet movies as well and that's where I saw what the Russians understand by “portable storage.”

Well, not exactly, as I have seen this USB “mod” on reddit. You probably know or have already heard of the Russian's passion for big things, as Moscow is the host of the “Big Theater,” their cars are well-proportioned, the tanks and planes alike and now one Russian has come up with the extra-portable concept of USB Wood Brick instead of the popular USB Stick format. It even has a switch for powering the USB on and off that is very hard to miss.

The picture is actually quite relevant for what I am telling you and the complex concept doesn't need serious explaining, I guess. What you also need to know is that besides the obvious protection offered by the wooden case it lays in, this Soviet USB is also protected against abusive use of the 4 GB of memory for long periods of time, by a cooling fan. Remember the famous fire started by a USB drive in 2008?

Neither do I, but this was really a mod that couldn't go unnoticed in gadget history. Next time you visit Russia and a person there offers you this Soviet USB drive as a gift, please accept it with joy as it is their tradition to share futuristic technology developments with visitors and tourists. If you watch the movie below, you will notice that it even sounds Russian, with a very powerful fan noise that can impress even the toughest gadgeteers out there.
