Windows 7 Might Come on PCs Before October 22

Though it's unlikely
Redmond-based software giant Microsoft will launch on the market its latest operating system for personal computers, Windows 7, on October 22, this is something that we are all aware of, yet it seems that some system builders say they will ship the platform on devices prior to that date. According to a recent article on TechFlash, October 13 is the lucky date for those eagerly awaiting for Windows 7 to become available on the market.

“I don't think I've ever been more prepared for an operating system launch than I have been with Windows 7,” Jon Bach, president of Auburn-based Puget Systems Inc., reportedly stated. According to him, Microsoft has announced small system builders that it will enable them to sell Windows 7 PCs the same day they will receive product keys, no later than October 13.

On the other hand, Microsoft says that system builders won't be ready to ship their products before the official general availability date of the platform. They will need the Windows 7 OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK), as well as other tools to pre-load the client on new computers, and this is something they do not have at the moment, ZDNet reports. However, said system builder points at October 13, though it seems that it won't get to ship the PCs before October 22.

“October 12 is the date that Microsoft enables our Authorized Replicators to begin shipping Windows 7 to Microsoft OEM Authorized Distributors. As the fulfillment process through our supply chain takes time, we begin initial product distribution in advance of General Availability. Therefore, this represents our Release To Manufacturing (RTM) process for OEMs who purchase indirectly through Distribution,” is what a Microsoft spokesperson stated, adding that, “while in theory a System Builder could get Windows 7 product pre-GA, based on supply chain analysis, the intended timing for customers to receive Windows 7 PCs from System Builders should be close to GA, October 22nd. This represents the same process Microsoft managed with past Windows releases.”

The idea is that system builders will get their Windows 7 final bits from Microsoft’s authorized distributors, which, in turn, should get the OEM software from Authorized Replicators. While large computer vendors around the world receive their Windows 7 bits from Microsoft directly, system builders have to get through a longer supply chain for that, which suggests that PCs pre-loaded with the OS might not arrive on the market prior to October 22 after all.

In tandem with the release of ShareTool 1.3 for Mac OS X, Yazsoft has released a new version of its powerful download manager for Mac, Speed Download. Version 5.2.5 has been optimized for the latest incremental update to Snow Leopard (10.6.1), while adding fixes for recently discovered bugs.According to Yazsoft, some of the new features included with Speed Download 5 comprise a gorgeous and easy-to-use interface, a re-engineered, turbo-charged download engine, a central database to manage all your downloads, uploads, and file transfers, a built-in FTP client (with SSL) that satisfies the basic FTP needs of most users, and more. New in version 5.2.5 are the optimizations for Mac OS X 10.6.1, updated Speed Download components (the company doesn’t specify which), a couple of fixes for the Speed Download contextual menu (visibility issue), and a compatibility issue that could lead to a crash in certain situations.

Speed Download 5 is optimized for any Internet connection (dial-up or broadband), and can collect and organize all your downloads. Some of the noteworthy features in Speed Download 5 include a clean interface with various view modes, a re-engineered, “universal” download engine optimized for maximum performance, a powerful database to manage all downloads, uploads, and file transfers, Mac iDisk integration and auto-resuming file transfers. A new, fully featured, built-in FTP client has been added in the first stable release of Speed Download 5. It uses encrypted file sharing between SD5 users.

Both the full and the trial versions of Speed Download 5.2.5 and Speed Download Lite 1.1.6 are available using the links below. Trial-mode restrictions include a shareware reminder screen and limited, simultaneous downloads. Speed Download requires any Internet connection and a Mac OS X-compatible Internet browser. The Universal Binary program is compatible with Intel and PowerPC processors. Mac OS X 10.4.11 (the latest available version of Tiger) is still supported.

Security software for Mac receives maintenance update
Intego has updated its flagship Mac app that protects your Mac from all known Mac viruses and malware, VirusBarrier X5. Version 10.5.10 is a maintenance update that adds enhanced compatibility with Snow Leopard.
“Since 1997, Intego has made a name for itself in the Internet security and privacy market for Apple Macintosh,” the company states. “With the most complete range of security software for Mac OS X, including antivirus, firewall, backup and parental control programs, Intego has proven its ability to innovate and develop products that outperform the others.”

Intego VirusBarrier X5 not only identifies viruses, but it can also eradicate them, according to the program’s description. The piece of software is said to prevent Macs from getting infected, and is touted as “the easiest to use antivirus program for Macintosh.”

Interested parties can download a 30-day free trial of the software, while the unregistered version allows files or volumes to be scanned for viruses, but doesn't provide the repair function (enabled only after purchase). VirusBarrier X5 calls for Mac OS X 10.4 or higher (Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard) and a 40 MB free hard-disk space.

Intego, the self-touted Macintosh security specialist, has also announced recently that its software is now fully compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. All of Intego’s software applications are available for immediate download using the links below.

Windows Mobile 6.5 on Over 30 Phones This Year

According to Microsoft

Redmond-based Microsoft is getting ready to release on the market the latest flavor of its mobile operating system, Windows Mobile 6.5, on October 6, and seems to be very optimistic about the market availability of the platform. According to the software giant, a number of more than 30 mobile phones are expected to hot the shelves with its new OS variant, and that will happen before 2009 is over.

A number of 15 handset makers have already lined up to launch Windows Mobile 6.5-based devices on the market during the ongoing year, Benjamin Tan, senior director, GCR Mobile Team Unit at Microsoft China, has recently stated, DigiTimes reports. Some of said vendors have already announced plans to unveil Windows phones in the near future, yet others are still expected to make an official announcement on their plans.

The list of phone makers that should come to the market with devices based on Microsoft's soon-to-be-here platform includes HTC (High Tech Computer), Acer, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics (LGE), Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, and Hewlett-Packard (HP), the news site notes. Sony Ericsson and HP seem to be the only vendors that haven't yet specified their intentions, though reports on their plans already emerged.

Along with these companies, wireless carriers around the world will also offer support for the forthcoming mobile operating system, and we can count here US operators like AT&T, Sprint Nextel, Verizon Wireless, or T-Mobile, as well as other companies from other parts of the world, including Orange, Vodafone, NTT DoCoMO, Softbank Mobile, SKT, Telstra and Telus.

At the same time, it should be noted that there are no exact details on which handset maker will unveil new phones based on Windows Mobile 6.5, and which plans on upgrading existing handsets to the OS. Even so, we already learned about the HTC Touch2, Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, LG GM750, Acer F1 and some Samsung Omnia phones that will surface with WM 6.5 on board right from the start, as well as on devices like Touch Pro2 and Touch Diamond2 from HTC, Toshiba TG01 or the Omnia series from Samsung that will receive the Windows Mobile 6.5 makeover.

Google Updates Mobile App for Windows Mobile

Google has just announced that its Mobile App for handsets running under Microsoft's

Windows Mobile operating system has been updated with a series of new features. According to the company, the new Google Mobile App for Windows Mobile now comes towards users with My Location, Google Suggest, and Search with Maps, though other enhancements will also be observed by those who are familiar with the application.

For starters, we should take a look at My Location, a new feature that should offer users the possibility to receive local results even without having to type in their location. “Once you see the blue My Location dot with your current location below the search box, simply search for a local query, for example 'italian restaurant', and the search results will contain local business results along with web results,” is how a post on Google Mobile Blog describes the feature.

At the same time, it seems that the location is encrypted when sent to the server, so as to

protect a user's privacy. Moreover, the feature also stores the most recent locations, which means that successive searches will deliver results based on the use of the same location. In addition, My Location is an option that can be disabled at any time via the Advanced Options menu.
Other new features with the Google Mobile App for Windows Mobile also include:
- Google Suggest. Reduce typing time by selecting suggestions to complete your queries. You will also see URL suggestions, which bring you directly to a web page, skipping the search results page entirely. Try typing "facebook" to see this kind of suggestion.
- Search with Maps. If you have installed Google Maps, type a local query and wait for suggestions. Select the suggestion with the red pin next to it to launch your search inside Google Maps.

As many of you might already know, the Google Mobile App also enables users to enjoy fast access to Google, as well as search history, so as to perform fast searches of previously performed queries.

Vodafone Launches New Handsets, Vodafone 360 Services

Both mobile and PC users can enjoy the new Internet services
Wireless carrier Vodafone has announced today the launch of a new suite of Internet services for its subscribers, called Vodafone 360, along with two new devices that support them, both coming from Samsung and running under LiMo, H1 and M1. According to the company, its users who will opt for Vodafone 360 mobile devices will also enjoy a proprietary UI from the carrier.

Vodafone 360, the carrier states, is set to bring together contacts, status updates and messaging services in a single place so as to enhance their connectivity experience. The new suite of services has been designed to work on a wide range of handsets, including the Vodafone 360 ones, as well as to offer synchronization options with a user's PC.

“The beauty of Vodafone 360 is that all the services work together and they are easy to use. Vodafone 360 enables customers’ digital lives. Customers can stay in touch and share experiences through social networks, instant messaging, email, apps, maps, music and buying digital content on their mobile bill, with the personalised address book at its heart,” Pieter Knook, director of internet services at Vodafone Group says. “Vodafone 360 is the first service of its kind to offer customers the benefits of a truly integrated mobile internet experience that gathers all their contacts and content, all around them, in one place,” he continues.

Among the benefits the new services will be able to deliver to users, we can count: all contacts and content is delivered in a single place, fast connectivity on various networking sites, options to create contact groups across social media networks, location sharing, picture tagging and sharing, synchronization between a handset and web, access to the service via various devices, a wide range of applications available at launch, as well as the availability of some of the services for non-Vodafone users.

As stated above, the new services also come with new handsets from Samsung. The Vodafone 360 H1 by Samsung is the first of them, and should land with a 3.5-inch display, as well as with Wi-Fi connectivity options, a 5-megapixel photo snapper, and 16 GB of memory. The new services and handsets will reach Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain and the UK in 2009, with India, Turkey, South Africa, New Zealand and Romania, as well as France through SFR, Russia through MTS and Australia through Vodafone Hutchison, to follow in 2010.

Gizmo also allows paid members of LiveJournal to make 'voiceposts' if they are unable to use the voicepost telephone lines provided by the website.

Unlike many of its competitors, Gizmo supports outbound caller ID in the United States, where people commonly reject incoming calls from unknown numbers. Skype and most other VoIP services seem to lack this feature.

iTunes 9.0.1 Available for Mac OS X, Windows

Apple has released a new version of iTunes, its proprietary digital media player application, used for playing, purchasing and organizing digital music and video files, as well as applications for the iPhone and iPod touch.

With the release of iTunes 9 earlier this month, Apple updated key parts of the software including the program’s user interface. However, as bugs and security issues are always discovered, the company is prompted to release more minor updates, such as today’s iTunes 9.0.1, which “provides a number of important bug fixes,” according to the Mac maker.
While the iTunes 9.0.1 changelog on Apple’s Support section may look big, it’s not. Apple enumerates both resolved issues in the new version, as well as the major enhancements contained in the big iTunes 9 update. As far as fixes are concerned, Apple claims to have resolved issues experienced by users while browsing the iTunes Store. The update addresses a performance issue where iTunes may become unresponsive, as well as one with the Zoom button not switching to Mini Player.

iTunes 9.0.1 improves application syncing for iPod touch and iPhone, while Genius is now automatically updated to show Genius Mixes. Problems where iTunes may unexpectedly quit, when syncing Podcasts in playlists to iPod or iPhone, or when sorting albums with multiple discs, have also been addressed, according to the company behind the Mac OS.

These fixes are available for both the Mac OS X and Windows versions of iTunes, requiring at least Mac OS 10.4.11 or later on the Mac side, and Windows Vista, or Windows XP SP2 on the PC side.

Available for Mac OS X v10.4.11 or later, Mac OS X Server v10.4.11 or later, Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 is also a security issue recently discovered in the software. “A buffer overflow exists in the handling of .pls files,” Apple has learned, after being tipped off by Steven Woolley at Oogli LLC. “Opening a maliciously crafted .pls file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue through improved bounds checking,” Apple reveals.

Besides regular bug fixes, the release also addresses a serious security issue
The VLC team is proud to announce that, after almost two months and 27 million downloads of VLC 1.0.1, the third version of the Goldeneye branch of VLC: 1.0.2 is now available for download. Mac OS X users can access the link included in this article to grab the latest version of the media player immediately.

According to the people behind the VideoLan Project, “This version introduces many fixes, notably for SSA decoding, v4l2, MacOS interface, ogg/theora, x264 modules and security issues.” “It also introduces the port to 64bits for Mac OS platform and 2 new languages (Kazakh and Croatian),” the team of developers says. However, “Because of the security issues, we strongly recommand [sic] everybody to update its version of VLC,” the VLC team warns.

Using methods similar to Apple’s (Support technotes), the VideoLan Project team posts the “Security Advisory 0901” on the videolan.org site, explaining the particularities of the security hole in question.

“When parsing a MP4, ASF or AVI file with an overly deep box structure, a stack overflow might occur,” the document reads. “It would overwrite the return address and thus redirect the execution flow,” according to the VLC developers, who credit Sebastian Apelt, siberas, for reporting this issue.

“If successful, a malicious third party could trigger execution of arbitrary code within the context of the VLC media player,” the technote reads. Still, the VLC team adds, for a hacker to properly exploit this issue, the user must explicitly open a specially crafted file, according to the bug’s documentation.

The usual workaround applies, as in, “The user should refrain from opening files from untrusted third parties or accessing untrusted remote sites (or disable the VLC browser plugins), until the patch is applied.”

“Alternatively,” the VideoLan people say, “the MP4, AVI and ASF demuxer plugins (libmp4_plugin.*, libavi_plugin.*, libasf_plugin.*) can be removed manually from the VLC plugin installation directory.”

However, the real, true solution to fixing this bug is, of course, installing the latest version of VLC Media Player. “[Version] 1.0.2 addresses this issue [while] patches for older versions are available from the official VLC source code repository 1.0-bugfix branch,” the VLC team says. Requiring Mac OS X 10.5 and later and a Quartz Extreme-capable Mac, VLC Media Player 1.0.2 is available for free download using the link below.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS a.k.a. Lucid Lynx

Dubbed Lucid Lynx, Ubuntu 10.04 will be the third LTS (Long Term Support) release and it will ship on April 29th, 2010. "Two years ago we announced the second LTS release, and what we hoped would become a standard practice of making LTS releases on a predictable two-year schedule, overlayed on our existing six-month schedule of desktop and server releases. We are now giving a name to the next Ubuntu LTS: The Lucid Lynx." - Mark Shuttleworth said in the official announcement. For those of you who don't know, the LTS releases of Ubuntu are maintained for 5 years on the server and 3 years on the desktop.

For the Lucid Lynx, the development team will focus their efforts on quality and stability! The main plans are to make Ubuntu 10.04 a bug-free operating system and bring quality improvements to the user interface, boot and installation experience and top-notch hardware support. Network Security Toolkit 2.11.0 Is Based on the 2.6.30.5 Linux Kernel

The operating system is now using RPM packages
Paul Blankenbaker announced yesterday the release of Network Security Toolkit 2.11.0, a completely redesigned and engineered version of this Linux distribution that provides tools for system administrators and security experts.

The developers have based the system on Fedora Live CD technology, which provides support for the use of RPM software packages, making the build process easier and empowering users to extend the included set of programs, as Paul Blankenbaker explains in the release announcement: "The architecture for building an NST distribution has been completely redesigned and engineered. Starting with this release, all system, network and security applications are now included as RPM packages. This allowed us to take advantage of the Fedora Live CD Project for spinning off an «NST Live» distribution. [...] With previous NST releases, it was difficult for users to add features and scope by compiling source code or adding new applications. Now one can simply YUM install their favorite applications via the command line or through the NST WUI."

Since this process of adding applications required a new set of capabilities from the live distribution, its root file system has been modified to support a writeable ramdisk overlay over the read-only DVD media. Also, to allow the users to make their changes persistent, one can now choose to install Network Security Toolkit to a USB drive, or even to a computer's hard drive. A boot CD has been created for computers that lack a DVD drive, which installs a minimal distribution and then builds the rest of the operating system on top, with packages retrieved from the Internet.

An interesting feature, in respect to the security experts that have to rely on many command line applications, is the addition of the "nsttraceroute" script, which takes the output of the traceroute utility and outputs a KML file that can be viewed in Google Earth, rendering visually the path that the network connection took. Two other utilities were added, "driftnet" and "tcpxtract", one capturing images from the network and the other documents. Multi-Tap Network Packet Capture has been extended by integrating ngrep and dsniff, and many other applications have been added to the distribution. All the previously included utilities have been updated to their latest version.

A New Google Plugin Enables Chrome to Run Inside IE

Giving users the benefits of a faster browser and HTML 5 support
A lot of people hate Internet Explorer 6 and for good reason. Developers don't like it because making their projects work on the aging browser with all its quirks eats up precious time and users don't like it because of its severe lack of features and poor performance. But for many upgrading isn't an option and many businesses still rely on the browser launched in 2001. But now there is an alternative; with a plugin users will get all of the benefits of a modern browser while still running IE and the best part is that it took Google to make this happen.

“Today, we're releasing an early version of Google Chrome Frame, an open source plug-in that brings HTML5 and other open web technologies to Internet Explorer,” software engineers Amit Joshi and Alex Russell and product manager Mike Smith wrote. “We're building Google Chrome Frame to help web developers deliver faster, richer applications like Google Wave. Recent JavaScript performance improvements and the emergence of HTML5 have enabled web applications to do things that could previously only be done by desktop software. One challenge developers face in using these new technologies is that they are not yet supported by Internet Explorer.”

With the Google Chrome Frame, users will actually be running Chrome inside Internet Explorer, taking advantage of the latest version of the Webkit rendering engine and Google’s speedy V8 JavaScript engine. This makes a significant difference for the users as, finally, they'll be able to view the websites in a standards compliant browser that will render them like they are supposed to be rendered, and they'll also notice a significant speed bump especially in JavaScript heavy applications, like most of Google's products. And, while it was designed with IE 6 users in mind, the plugin is actually available for all Internet Explorer versions.

But, apart from the improved performance, the new plugin will enable users to enjoy some of the latest web technologies, like the ones from the proposed HTML 5 standard, which most modern browsers – Firefox, Chrome, Safari – already support but towards which Microsoft has been very reluctant. The plugin itself will be a 500 KB download after which it will download an additional 10 MB or so of data. The Webkit rendering engine and V8 are straight from the developers channel so IE users will actually be running newer and faster versions than Chrome beta or stable users. And, because Chrome was designed to be as lightweight as possible, the performance penalty of running two browsers at the same time should be offset.

The powerful Windows Mobile-based Samsung Omnia II is expected to make its way to Verizon Wireless' lineup in the near future, and now an image with the device ha

s also emerged into the wild. The first thing that anyone who knows the Omnia II can already notice is that Verizon's version seems to be quite different from the original model.

The distinctive cubic d-pad that was present on the original Omnia II is not there anymore, ant the handset looks just like another Samsung phone that emerged into the wild recently, namely the SCH-B900, which was just launched on the market in Korea. Other than that, it seems that Omnia II is set to come to Verizon with a 1500mAh battery packed inside, which means that it should be able to deliver enough usage time to its owners.

According to an article on UnwiredView, the Omnia II for Verizon is none other than the Samsung SCH-i920, which was caught in FCC's courtyard back in June. The specs list of the phone should include Bluetooth, EV-DO and Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as a 3.5mm headset jack, FM radio, and the TouchWiz UI from the phone maker.

There are no exact details on whether the handset will sport even more differences from the original model, but we can always hope it will deliver most of them to Verizon's users too. Until some more details on the phone become available, we should take a look at the SCH-B900 for Korea, which will also include the TouchWiz UI, along with CMDA EV-DO connectivity.

The specification list of the device also shows a 3-inch touchscreen display that boasts a 240 x 400 pixel resolution, as well as a 6-megapixel photo snapper, built-in GPS receiver, DMB TV, Bluetooth connectivity, a MicroSD memory card slot that supports up to 16GB of additional storage space, and a 960 mAh battery.

Global notification system for Mac OS X
The development team behind the powerful Growl notification system for Mac OS X has announced an update delivering fixes and improvements. The developers also confirm ongoing work on Growl 1.2 for 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Growl is best known for its ability to display notifications (although it can also be used in other ways). Notifications are a way for your applications to provide you with new information, without you having to switch from the application you're already in. For example, if you're writing something important, but also archiving something big (using a compression tool that supports Growl), the application will notify you when the process is over by displaying a notification in a corner of the screen (or even in the middle, if you so choose). Growl is very useful for those who use IM applications on a daily basis and, of course, an e-mail client.

According to the development team, changes in Growl 1.2 Beta 4 include:

- Fixed the displays pop-up menus' failure to list WebKit-based displays;
- Changed fade time for most visual displays from three-fourths of a second to one-fifth;
- Increased default time on screen from four seconds to five to compensate for the above change;
- Assorted fixes to bugs discovered by Ted Kremenek using the Clang Static Analyzer;
- Updated minimum system version of Growl to 10.4, matching reality.

Growl 1.2 Beta 4 now Supports Safari 4, according to the release notes, and actually requires the software in order to post notifications for users of the standard Mac web browser. The new version also fixes a small memory leak that occurred every time the user downloaded something.

Parted Magic 4.5 Takes Low Resource Functionality to Extremes

This Sunday, Patrick Verner announced the release of Parted Magic 4.5, a new version of the popular partitioning and data-recovery Linux distribution. It includes many fixes and improvements, especially for Intel graphics cards and the newly introduced point to point networking support.

We all know that getting the latest Xorg to play well with some Intel graphics cards can be a tough nut to crack, but the developers managed to add support for them, allowing the user to select the desired video driver at boot time, as Patrick Verner points out in the release announcement: "To combat some of the problems associated with the newer versions of Xorg and Intel chipsets, Parted Magic offers driver versions intel-2.4.1, intel-2.5.1, intel-2.6.3, intel-2.7.1 to the boot options. At the first boot screen press and then add one of the listed drivers to the syslinux command line. Parted Magic will then install them while the system is booting. Most people will not have to do this because the default intel-2.8.1 driver fixes most problems from previous releases."

Running Parted Magic 4.5 on computers with low hardware specs is now made easier, as running the distribution from RAM now requires 192MB of physical memory, which is quite an improvement from the 256MB requirement in Parted Magic 4.4. Also, you can get it to start with only 48MB of memory if you select the "Live with low RAM settings" boot option.

Another interesting addition, one that you wouldn't expect to find in a minimal Linux distribution, is represented by the Bluetooth packages. You will find bluez-utils 3.36, bluez-libs 3.36 and bluez-hcidump 1.42 on the CD, ready to fulfill your Bluetooth connection needs. Also, NTFS support has been improved once again, with the inclusion of ntfsdump_logfile, ntfswipe, ntfstruncate, ntfsmove, ntfsmftalloc and ntfsck.
